15 Years of Impact through Partnership & Cooperation

Partnerships are our superpower! Conflict Awareness Project’s success over the past 15 years has been driven by supportive partnerships. Bottom line is we get more done when our mission for a just, peaceful, and sustainable planet is amplified by others.

"As the director of CAP, let me introduce you to one of the most enduring. For nearly a decade, we have partnered with the Forum on the Arms Trade, which celebrates its own 10th anniversary this year. The Forum is the home of a world-wide network of experts working together to shed light on the implications of arms transfers, security assistance, and weapons use. It has become a critical one-stop resource for governments, multilateral organizations, and the media.

Reflecting on this partnership takes me back to its origins. A personal favorite story of mine. I initially met the Forum’s Founder and current Director Jeff Abramson at the University of California, Berkeley. Back in the day, as director of CAP, I led a public policy group -- that included Jeff – which focused on the problem of illicit arms proliferation in Colombia. Jeff really dug into the project, excelling at tackling the policy implications, and he went on to establish his own career path dedicated to addressing the much-needed regulation of international arms transfers. I like to think I inspired that in some small way. He never knew that his research assisted me in writing a white paper that eventually led to policy changes that more effectively prevent the arming of violent non-state actors.

Fast forward to today, and our collaboration continues to thrive. Today, I gave a “career path” presentation to the Forum’s 2024-2025 Emerging Experts Group. This group hails from all over the map, from Lebanon to South Africa, from Myanmar to Ukraine, from Norway to Australia. I didn’t need to inspire anyone; they are already committed. So if you are an organization focused on similar issues you may wish to contact one of these incredibly dynamic emerging experts for staffing or funding opportunities. Check them out on the Forum’s website to learn more.

In posts to come, we will spotlight other partnerships that really helped CAP to make a difference over our past 15 years. It is one of the 15 success stories we are elevating to demonstrate not only our past achievements, but how we got to the place where we are today, still driving change that we believe benefits justice, peace, and security for those being harmed by the bad actors in the world."
