In the heart of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Ituri District lies Concession Area 40, one of the nation’s richest gold deposits. Despite its vast mineral wealth, the region remains entrenched in poverty, a stark contrast driven by the exploitation of its resources. This exploitation is not limited to local actors but is fueled by foreign corporations and individuals who have leveraged ongoing armed conflict to pilfer millions of dollars in gold. This report delves into a nine-year international investigation tracing the illicit flow of gold from the war-torn mines of Ituri to the financial ledgers of global corporations. The findings highlight the complex network of actors, from rebel groups on the ground to multinational businesses, that profit from human rights abuses and the destabilization of the region.
