The U.S. and Mexico face a severe security crisis fueled by the trafficking of hundreds of thousands of guns across the southern U.S. border each year. These weapons empower Mexican transnational criminal organizations, causing immense suffering in both nations. This report highlights the urgent need to curb cross-border gun trafficking to advance the objectives of the U.S.-Mexico Bicentennial Framework for Security, Public Health, and Safe Communities—a bilateral security agreement established nearly two years ago. By implementing our recommendations, both countries can more effectively combat illicit gun flows, save lives, and promote prosperity.

Our report offers a detailed analysis of this critical issue and presents strategies to disrupt the transnational organized crime that gun trafficking sustains.
